The president's decision to approve the members' revised wages and other benefits has been hailed by the Judicial Service Staff Association of Ghana (JUSAG).
On May 24, 2023, an indefinite strike began as a result of Association members' protests against what they perceived as the government's lack of interest in approving the negotiated terms.
The Association requested the Chief Justice, Her Ladyship Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkonoo, to take action after claiming that the government had ignored its requests for immediate attention over the execution of the agreed cost of living allowance for members.
With an acknowledgment that the president had authorized the revised salaries and other allowances due to members, the Association stated that its interaction with the Chief Justice had produced fruitful outcomes.
Although the process and engagement with the Chief Justice had been difficult, the association said in a statement that it was "glad that her ingenuity and exceptional leadership with the support of other stakeholders led to the conclusion of the engagement on the 15th of June 2023 with the understanding that implementation of the reviewed salaries will take effect in July 2023."
The statement from the organization continued, "We are comforted by the letter of Her Ladyship Honourable Chief Justice dated July 13, 2023 which confirms that His Excellency the President of Ghana has approved the new salary structure and implementation will be completed in the month of July 2023 as indicated by the Ministry of Finance at the close of engagement.
