Due to their failure to pay their medical fees, fifteen (15) patients who were imprisoned at the Eastern Regional Hospital in Koforidua have been discharged and can now return home.
The patients were separated from their families for more than three weeks after undergoing a variety of medical procedures and being given the all-clear to return home by medical personnel.
They were freed after Suzy Herbal Center administration replied favorably to a distress call from Koforidua Central Hospital management asking for help in paying the hospital's medical costs, which came to more than GH30,000.
Dr. Foster Amponsah, clinical director at Eastern Regional Hospital, said the situation was having a negative impact on hospital operations and causing more congestion inside the building.
He urged business in Ghana to help a number of other people who are still being held in the hospital because they are unable to pay their medical fees.
To help meet the requirements of the most vulnerable and underprivileged members of society, Charles Obiri, the public relations officer of Suzy Herbal Center, urged the government and the Ministry of Health to review the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) in a statement to Citi News.
