Every time it rains more than 50 millimeters, Accra, the nation's capital, will flood, according to a warning from the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMeT).
The warning follows the heavy rains of last Friday, which submerged portions of Accra in sizable swamps of moving water.
After almost an hour of rain, numerous locations, including the Tema Motorway, Kwame Nkrumah Interchange, Kaneshie, North Kaneshie, Alajo, Adabraka, Accra Central, Tema, Tema station-Accra, Osu, and others, were severely impacted.
Many homes and cars were flooded by the water, and it also caused drains carrying flowing water to overflow. Some potholes on the roadways were also widened and deeper.
According to Joseph Portuphy, the Head of Forecasting at the GMeT, who was interviewed on the Citi Breakfast Show, the city experienced that degree of flooding because the rain was measured at 78 millimeters.
He declared that everytime it rained more than 50 millimeters, Accra would experience problems.
Accra will flood if there is more than 50 millimeters of rain in two to three hours, and that is exactly what happened, he said.
Although the city is now experiencing a modest rainy season, Mr. Portuphy said that the rains will be strong.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO) has issued a warning to the public on the impending heavy rainfall.
The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has predicted that there would be more rain, according to the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of NADMO, George Ayisi.
He advised the populace to prepare for additional rain in the upcoming days.
"GMeT and I communicate frequently, and they regularly update us. We should exercise caution because it is predicted that the rain will be heavy and intense.
"Those who are traveling may experience stormy or windy conditions. Just be cautious when traveling to areas with trees and other vegetation. Please use caution if you are in locations where the roofing on houses or other structures is subpar.
He said, "Let's try to find safe havens in the city and then let's try to move to safer grounds for ourselves and our relatives if we are in places where we are not sure and they are flood prone."
