James Gyakye Quayson, a candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), is in a commanding lead in the by-election, according to preliminary results that are slowly coming in from the Assin North district.
Upon completion of the required procedures by the Electoral Commission, he will probably be declared the winner.
Along with Charles Opoku of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and Bernice Enyonam Sefenu of the Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG), Mr. Quayson entered the race.
According to preliminary results from the 99 polling places in Assin North, Mr. Quayson received 17,205 votes, or 57.4% of the total, while Charles Opoku of the NPP received 11,389 votes, or 42%.
According to the preliminary results, Sefenu of the LPG was far behind with only 85 votes (0.028%).
Gyakye Quayson, who received 17,498 votes to win the seat in the 2020 elections, was expelled from Parliament for holding a second citizenship before submitting his nomination papers.
Later, the Supreme Court ruled that Parliament must remove his name from its files. The Electoral Commission was forced to call a by-election in the constituency after announcing the seat vacant.
The opposition NDC fielded Mr. Quayson for the by-election scheduled today, June 27, 2023, unfazed by the defeat.
According to preliminary figures, Mr. Quayson is likely to win by a landslide against pollsters' predictions that the winner would have a narrow margin of victory.

The NDC and NPP have both accused one another of purchasing votes and using intimidation. Mr. Quayson is currently being prosecuted for allegedly holding dual citizenship after the State brought him before the court.
