Before the National Delegates Conference of the New Patriotic Party in November, members of Alan Kyerematen's campaign team in the Northern Region formally endorsed Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
This comes after Alan Kyerematen left the NPP on Monday at a news conference that was widely shown on television.
A representative of the Alan campaign team in the area, Chabite Moses Moye, expressed dismay at Mr. Kyerematen's decision to leave the New Patriotic Party during a press conference in Tamale on Tuesday.
He stressed that Alan Kyerematen's support from the campaign team was dependent on his membership in the NPP; as a result, by severing links with the organization, the former flagbearer aspirant also severed ties with his regional support base.
According to the organization, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia now stands as the best candidate to lead the NPP into the 2024 election as a result of Mr. Kyerematen's resignation, which is why they have decided to endorse him.
"All indications point to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president who is also running for president, winning. To advance the party, we must work. We will undoubtedly work with him to ensure that he receives the approval, and we'll keep pushing for NPP to come to power in 2024," he said.
Mr. Chabite emphasized that the team will continue to assist the NPP and would not desert it in favor of Alan's personal goals.
He criticized Alan for betraying his devoted fans and lamented the fact that he was unable to participate in the party's election.
We are here today to voice our deep unhappiness with Mr. Kyerematen as erstwhile supporters of the NPP's Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen presidential campaign. Within our party, we as individuals have consistently believed in Alan. We devotedly backed his campaign and are confident in his ability to lead NPP.
"However, Alan made the unannounced decision to drop out of the competition, claiming sporadic acts of violence during our special delegates' conference. We truly feel that the grassroots was behind him, and this decision has caused us unnecessary suffering. When he announced his withdrawal from the November presidential election, we were astounded and appalled.
"This behavior can only be characterized as cowardly and a betrayal of his devoted fans. As a result, our support for him was based on the NPP rather than on him as a person. His resignation from the NPP stunned us, and some of us felt let down. We shall not desert our party; we continue to be the NPP.
During a press conference on Tuesday, the NPP endorsed Mr. Kyerematen's choice.
