Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, the member of parliament for Assin Central, had asked the Court of Appeal to allow him to include new evidence in his appeal against Abdul Malik Kweku Baako, the editor-in-chief of the New Crusading Guide.
Kennedy Agyapong asked for permission from the Accra High Court to provide new evidence in support of his appeal against the court's decision in favor of Mr. Baako in a defamation case.
Prior to deciding the motion, the Appeal Court had set May 11, 2023 as the date for the judgment it would deliver in opposition to the High Court's decision of June 26, 2020.
A three-member court panel unanimously dismissed the application on July 5, 2023, following the hearing of arguments from all sides of the case.
In a Facebook post in response to the court's decision, Mr. Baako expressed hope that justice would ultimately be done.
"*As I have said before, I am a very patient and resilient "animal"; I am also certain that justice will win out in the end!" He declared.
On Friday, June 26, 2023, an Accra High Court convicted Kennedy Agyapong guilty of defaming Kweku Baako after the MP accused the journalist of working in galamsey, an illegal form of mining.
Kennedy Agyapong was given 30 days by the court in its decision on the lawsuit filed in October 2018 to withdraw and apologize three times on the platforms he used to defame Kweku Baako.
Damage was assessed at GH100,000, and the Assin Central MP was also ordered to pay GH30,000 in costs.
