The Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources has been chosen by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to be Freda Prempeh, Member of Parliament for Tano North and Minister of State at the Presidency.
She succeeds Cecilia Abena Dapaah, who resigned from the portfolio over the weekend in response to the incident involving the stolen money.
This information was released in a statement dated today, Tuesday, July 25, 2023, and signed by Eugene Arhin, Director of Communications in the Office of the President.
"The Minister of State at the Presidency and Member of Parliament for Tano North, Hon. Freda Prempeh, has been named as the Minister for Sanitation and Water Resources by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. She succeeds Hon. Cecilia Abena Dapaah, whose resignation letter, dated Saturday, July 22, 2023, was accepted by the President on that day.
The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) detained the former minister of sanitation and water resources on Monday in the afternoon. At around 10:20 p.m. on Monday, he was later released on bail with a guarantee.
After being held by the OSP for several hours following searches at both her private home in Abelemekpe and official housing in Cantonments, she was eventually freed. The searches were connected to the housekeepers' suspected theft of $1 million in cash, which prompted her departure on Saturday.
The OSP conducted a comprehensive search at Mrs. Dapaah's official residence in Cantonments earlier on Monday, July 24, 2023. Agents of the Special Prosecutor then conducted a search of her Abelemekpe home.
Profile Of Freda Prempeh
Beginning in 2002, Freda Prempeh served eight years in the Assembly representing the Lakoo Electoral Area of the La-Dadekotopo Constituency in the Greater Accra Region.
She received a call in February 2006 asking her to join the National Reconciliation Commission as a Public Affairs Officer for a nine-month term.
She presently represents Tano North in parliament and participates in the government assurance committee for mines and energy.
In 2017, President Akufo-Addo named her as the deputy minister of works and housing.
She ran as the New Patriotic Party's parliamentary candidate for the Tano North constituency in the 2020 general election in Ghana and won with more than 51% of the vote.
She is now a member of the Eighth Parliament of the Fourth Republic, serving her third term as an MP.
